Wipeout 2

Who knew Wiping out could be so fun!

If you have paid any attention to the TV lately, you would know that there is a show called Wipeout. And if you haven't, well, consider yourself told. For those of you who have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, Wipeout is a show where people compete to win $50,000 by making it through an obstacle course in the shortest time.

While this may sound easy, the courses are made to be difficult and make you wipe out (hence the show's title). And people wipe out a LOT. But that is what makes it fun to watch.

Wipeout 2 is a game based on the craziness that is that show. And contrary to what the name may tell you, it is actually the third game based off of the show. And there are actually two aspects to this game, the single player and the multiplayer.

Part of one course-
Those glowing circles means those gloves are going to punch
Better watch out!*
There is really nothing too special about the single player mode. You get to choose your contestant from a list and you assume the identity of that contestant for the remainder of the 'episode.' Each episode consists of rounds where you compete with 3 computer opponents to get the best time running through the obstacle courses. If you end up with the best time, you win $50,000! Now if only it were real money, especially because I've had the best time on 3 different episodes.

While some of the controls are a little touchy, generally speaking, the controls are easy enough to figure out. Easy to learn, difficult to master describes them perfectly. However, that changes with the multiplayer portion.

The multiplayer is where this game really shines. At the most basic level, the two modes are identical. The only difference is that the second player (the one that ISN'T going through the course at the time) gets to throw rubber balls at their opponent. And although these don't knock the person off course (at least, not that I can tell), each hit adds 5 seconds to their time, making it that much easier for you to get a better time on your run through.

Sounds fun right? Well, after the first player makes it through the course, the tables turn and they get to throw stuff at you. You can see how this would be fun, especially for those who realize that it is just a game.

And now comes the time that you are all waiting for: My Rating.

Wipeout 2 gets 7 Stars from us here at The Review

After running the game through our proprietary rating system, it was determined that Wipeout 2 would get a 7/10 rating. While the game is fun, the single player mode is significantly less fun than the multiplayer mode. Also, the fact that there are only 10 episodes per mode and no DLC severely limits the replayability factor of this game. It does have one redeeming factor, which is the fact that the loading times are minimal.

So, if you plan on getting this game, I would rent it first (Gamefly memberships are only $15/month for the 1-game plan) or buy it used. Even then, I would only get it if you are sure that you have someone else to play it with.
