Assault Girls

Let the Game Begin.

Assault Girls sounds awesome when you read about it. 3 girls and one guy (somehow, I don't think Assault Girls and Guy would sell as well) are playing in a live virtual reality MMORPG. In this game, known as Avalon(f), you are up against giant sandworms. Being a Japanese film, the worms are big, but the guns are even bigger.

As the first foreign film that I've reviewed, however, I was somewhat let down. I mean, the special effects are great, and due to Avalon(f) being an English only game, the time spent reading subtitles is very minimal. But what really dropped the ball was a combination of two things.

First, there was really no story. Basically (AND HERE ARE THE SPOILERS), four solo gamers get together to defeat the main boss, a.k.a., the big worm. And that is really it. Other than that, there's a snail that keeps showing up, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things.
Secondly, the action sequences are few and far between. OK, I know that it can't be nothing but action, but out of the 70 minutes that I watched it, maybe 15 minutes was action. The remaining 55 minutes (percentage-wise, that's just under 80%) of the movie consisted of watching subtitles in the 5 minute intro, watching the one guy, who didn't buy a transport, walk across the large arena, or watch him talk with 2 of the 3 girls. Only 2 out of 3? That's right, the third girl speaks not a single word throughout the entire movie. And not counting these four, the only other character is the omniscient Game Master whose voice you sometimes hear.
Assault Girls gets only 3 stars

After running Assault Girls through The Review's proprietary rating system, it comes out with only 3 stars. Why? Well, as mentioned before, there really is no plot whatsoever. The characters are pretty forgettable, and it's not one of those films that you would want to watch more than once. If you are looking for a movie to be white noise, by all means, this is a good one. Other than that, skip it.
