The most recent game that I received from GameFly (gotta love having that account) is this amazing little gem.
If you are familiar with Mario Kart (who isn't?), you will get the gist of this game. You race in a cart and shoot stuff at your opponents. But that is where the similarities end.
ModNation Racers (henceforth MNR) is more like a mashup between Mario Kart and Little Big Planet. What I mean by that is that there is racing with powerups like Mario Kart, as well as the ability to do tons of customization like LBP. You can change your character (Mod), your car (Kart) and you can even create your own racetracks using an intuitive developer-like interface.
All this makes for a really fun little game. And I don't mean little in the literal sense. MNR is really quite large. There is even a pretty fun story/career mode that follows you (your name in the story is Tag) as your racing career progresses.
So we have racing, we have shooting other racers, we have massive amounts of customization, and yet, there is still more! On top of all this, you can share your mods, karts and tracks with the rest of the world through the share station. This allows others to download your creations and use them, or to remix them and use the changed versions. So if you get bored with any of the default stuff, you can rest assured there will always be something new for you to try out. And you can try them out on a single console or through the online multiplayer system as well.

The popularity of this game has even spawned two other versions for the PSP and Vita systems. I haven't had the pleasure of trying them out, but I assume they are much of the same.

While the game is enormous amounts of fun, it does come at a cost. Between many, if not all, of the sections of the game, be it between the ModSpot (main hub of the game) and a race, or just between races themselves, are prefaced with a loading screen that can take anywhere from 2-6 minutes to get rid of. So, be prepared for some dead time while you play. The good part about that though is it allows you time to grab a snack or mentally prepare yourself (not that you really need to) for the upcoming race or whatever you are waiting for the game to load.

Due to these long loading times, MNR loses a couple stars from what could have been a perfect score. I mean, I understand the game needs to load, and I can even forgive the occasional long load, but when it takes a while to load everytime? That is unexcusable. Regardless, if you have a PS3 (or PSP or Vita, for that matter) you should check out ModNation Racers, because it is a great game to play with friends
Have an idea for a review?
