The Truth Will Consume You.
What is it about horror movies based on true stories that makes them so scary? Maybe it's the fact that somehow, somewhere, what we are seeing unfold on screen happened to someone for real. Maybe we are so idealistic in our beliefs that we think that something as horrific as a haunting couldn't possibly happen. Whatever the reason, horror movies are some of the most watched movies, and we always seem to be drawn to those that have that 'Based on True Events' tag.
The Conjuring is no different. It follows the investigation of a family's haunted house and the related incidents by world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Ed and Lorraine are also well known due to their involvement in The Amityville Horror, which happened sometime after the events of this film.
Without giving too much away, Director James Wan (Saw and Insidious) definitely knows what he is doing. He was able to scare you without a lot of blood and gore. In fact, there was hardly any at all, which makes things somewhat scarier than you would think.
For being based on a true story, the characters and story translate well to the screen. You genuinely feel for the characters, which doesn't always happen. And the story pulls you in, keeping you on the edge of your seat until the next time it makes you jump off of it.
The one place that the movie kinda fails in is how generic some of the happenings are. Things that have become staples in any haunting movie lately appear in The Conjuring in great numbers. While this detracts from the originality a little, the other factors in the movie make up for it.
All in all, The Conjuring is a decently scary movie, that doesn't rely heavily on CG or blood and guts to scare you. After crunching some numbers, I decided that it deserves 8 stars. It's a good movie if you are looking to get a few scares in, and both the casual horror movie watcher and the hardcore horror aficionado should enjoy it. The film is still in theaters, so get out and see it while you can, though the movie should be just as good when it is released to DVD/Blu Ray.
