In our darkest hour,
When our leaders have fallen,
A hero will rise.
It appears that J.J. Abrams has done it again. He has again lent his considerable talents to the reboot of the Star Trek franchise and pulled out a winner. Star Trek Into Darkness is the continuation of said reboot and is a decent stand alone film on its own.
It goes without saying that the action in the film is top notch. Couple this with the gorgeous effects and acting abilities of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto (and others) and you have yourself an awesome film. But its not all rainbows and butterflies (or green-skinned girls and starships, if you want).
The film somewhat does a repeat of the first one, in the fact that Kirk (Pine) has another arc where he ends up drunk in a bar and has to be brought back from the edge by a father-figure. On top of that, the film also somewhat repeats the beginnings of Kirk and Spock's (Quinto) friendship as if they weren't friends already. Now, I know that this is still early in the reboot's timeline, but did they really need to repeat that again? Especially considering that at the end of the first movie, Kirk and Spock were on good terms.
Aside from the repeats, I really didn't have too many complaints. STID has a good overall storyline, and there are plenty of nods to the original series and films for the classic Trekkies to pick up on. Couple this with Abrams' continuous switching of classic elements, and I'm sure fans of the original series can figure out quite a bit about the movie just from the beginning half hour or so. One of these things is the fact that Kirk dies.

Overall, the movie is a good one, and I would recommend it to Trekkies of all sorts, as well as new people to Star Trek. Rewatchability is high, the action and effects are awesome, and the acting is pretty good too, but keep in mind that some of the story isn't that original (classic fans, you'll understand). If it is still in a theater near you, go! Go see it! If not, it comes out on DVD and Blu Ray on September 10th, so you won't have to wait that long to see it, but see it you shall. Live long, and prosper my readers.
