The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Every revolution begins with a spark.

Just as a forewarning, this review is a bit spoiler heavy. Please forgive me.

Unlike with the first Hunger Games movie, I didn't wait 5 months to see this one: I went and saw it on opening weekend in a packed theater. And you know what? I'm glad I did.

The movie follows the events of the first, albeit a year later. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) are still dealing with the aftermath of their victory in the 74th Hunger Games, and the 75th is rapidlly approaching. The Capitol, or more accurately, President Snow, feels threatened by Katniss and orchestrates her return to the Games.

What does this mean for our heroine? What is she worried about? All she wants to do is protect her on-screen (possibly more) love interest Peeta. She has no idea that she is a symbol of hope for a burgeoning rebellion. No idea of what will happen to her in the coming days. And that just makes this film that much more exciting. Even though I have read the books, and I knew everything that was going to happen, each new development in the film kept me on the edge of my seat, right up til the credits at the end.
Katniss' dress after its transformation

I gasped in awe and wonder when Katniss' dress morphed into a mockingjay. I felt her disdain and hatred of President Snow (Donald Sutherland). I even cried when Cinna was attacked . What can I say, this was an extremely emotion filled story.

My one complaint about this movie is that it seemed a bit rushed, especially with the Games sequences. I mean, we don't even see any part of the Games until around the 2 hour mark, and then the entirety of them (and the following events) are all crammed into the last 20 minutes or so. I know that it is an adaptation of a book, and not everything can make it into the movie, but I would rather have a longer movie than have a film that feels rushed.

THG:CF gets a near perfect 9 stars.

Overall, the film was a hit with my wife and myself. In fact, if it wasn't for the rushed ending, it would have gotten a perfect rating from me. That is saying something, since I don't give those perfect ratings out often. But if the box office is any indication, this film is very deserving of praise. Just in the opening weekend, the film has already surpassed its estimated budget, and that revenue will continue to stream in as people flock to the theater to see it. And I really hope that you are one of those people going to see it, I highly recommend it.
