The Fault in Our Stars

One Sick Love Story.

There are some movies that when you watch them, you don't give them a second thought. Then there are others that are extremely emotional. The Fault in Our Stars is one such film.

If you didn't know already, TFiOS is based on a book by John Green. It is the story of Hazel, a girl with terminal cancer, and Gus, a boy who had cancer and lost his leg because of it, and how they eventually fall in love. And, like I've already said, it is very emotional.

I initially had no desire to watch this movie. It just didn't strike me as something I would find interesting. My wife, however, decided to watch it when I was at work one morning. I get back and she is bawling her eyes out. So, naturally, I had to watch it to see what got her all worked up. Well, suffice to say, I was pleasantly surprised.

The story in and of itself is solid. Though, due to the nature of the main character's conditions, some plot elements are quite obvious. This is also where that emotional bit comes in, but I'm not going to get into that as I don't want to spoil what little bit of surprise there might actually be in the movie.

While their conditions make the characters predictable in the story, the characters themselves are actually really well written. And on that note, they are also cast pretty good as well. Hazel is portrayed by Shailene Woodley (Divergent, Secret Life of the American Teenager) and Gus is played by Ansel Elgort (Divergent). Both do very well at making you root for them.

FiOS gets an above average rating.

The fault lays not with the stars, but with the lack of rewatchability on this one. Unless you really like really emotional stories that make you cry your eyes out, you probably won't end up watching this one more than a few times. That being said, fans of Nicholas Sparks' work will enjoy this movie. Just plan on doing some crying.
