What Did They See?
Recently, I had the pleasure to finally watch The Woman in Black. Mainly because the second one had come out and I wanted to watch the first one first, but I digress. Going into the movie, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect with it being a horror movie and all, but I must say I was thoroughly impressed with it.
The story follows the story of lawyer Arthur Kipps (Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe) as he attempts to tie up the affairs of a woman who has recently passed away. He travels to the small town of Crythin Gifford, where he is met with hostility by the local townsfolk, who urge him to go home. Kipps insists on staying and goes to the Eel Marsh House and finds that not everything is as it seems.
The story is very well written, and it should be, considering it was a book first. That's right, The Woman in Black and its sequel were both based on books, the first one being written in 1983. As far as I can tell, the story translated very well from page to screen.
This translation success was no doubt in part due to the casting. Not only is Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role, but CiarĂ¡n Hinds (also from Harry Potter and Game of Thrones) makes a notable appearance as well. These casting choices are, in my opinion, brilliant, as the actors are really able to portray their characters very well.
Any reader of mine will know of my stance on horror movies. Well, this movie caused me to flip that stance around and change my way of thinking. As a horror movie, it was very well put together. There was a fair bit of paranormal occurrences, as well as a few points where I definitely jumped. And all this without a single bit of gore. I love that about this movie.
There is a decent amount of rewatchability for TWiB as well. It is definitely worth at least 2 or 3 watches, just so you can spot the little details strewn throughout. It's not one that I would watch all the time, but definitely worth the first few runthroughs.

The Woman in Black gets 8 gold stars |
Overall the movie is great. It has a great story, brilliant actors, and probably the most W.T.F. plot twist moment in the ending. If you are a fan of paranormal horror, Daniel Radcliffe or simply book adaptations, I would suggest this movie to you. Just watch out for the Woman in Black.
