Who's Next?
While the 10th game in the franchise is awesome, it doesn't quite get 10 stars. It does however get a whopping 9 stars. The story is good, the new characters are familiar yet distinct and replayability is insanely high. The main downside for me was that in online battles, I always seemed to get matched with an opponent who could kill me in 30 seconds or less, so I wish the matchmaking was a bit better. Overall however, if you are a fan of the game, or just fighting games in general, I would suggest you pick this one up. It's available on past and next gen XBox and Playstation consoles, as well as PC and a slimmed down version for iOS and Android devices. I just have one question for you: Who's Next?
Most of you know that Mortal Kombat X just came out. If not, where the heck have you been? Mortal Kombat X is the 10th installment of the popular fighting franchise (just don't call it Mortal Kombat 10) and was just recently released on PC, Xbox, Playstation and mobile devices (sort of).
Like the other games in the series, MKX at its core is a fighting game, where you take control of one of a selection of fighters and try to best your opponent in a best of 3 fight. You can do this by carefully stringing together intricate combos of moves, button mashing, or my personal favorite, a combination of the two.
The game has a nice mix of multiplayer and single player modes to satisfy whatever mood you are in. In single player, you have the standard single fight, as well as a story mode and towers. These towers come in two formats, the Klassic Towers that players of the older games should recognize, and the Living Towers, in which the fights have constantly changing modifiers. There is also the Krypt, which is a pseudo adventure game of its own where you wander around a cemetery/cave system and unlock new finishers and costumes.
In multiplayer, there are several different modes as well. You have the traditional matchmaking in which you are matched with a random opponent, but also rooms, which are public lobbies where you can challenge anyone looking for a fight. There is also a team mode where you and another fighter take on a team of 2 (i have not tried this mode yet unfortunately).
With the multitude of game modes, as well as the 3 different specialties each character has, replayability is pretty darn high. There is always something to do, especially with the addition of the Faction War. Faction War pits each of the universe's 5 factions against each other in a weekly contest to see who is the best. This determination is made based on gaining experience in the various modes, as well as daily challenges for bonus experience. The winning faction gets a reward of some sort, for example, the Lin Kuei faction (my faction!) won the first week and got a few banner pieces and 5000 koins to spend in the Krypt.
While talking about the different modes, the story mode is not too bad. You are taken through 12 chapters as a predetermined character with each chapter featuring a different fighter. I won't tell you about any of the story elements, but the story is fairly well written. I do wish you could pick your own character to fight with throughout the story, but that would break the story at certain points, so at the same time, I'm glad that wasn't an option.
I don't know how the game looks on the older consoles or PC, but on the next gen console, the graphics are amazingly detailed. Each arena is rendered in such high detail, even the backgrounds are crazy. As part of this detail, there are also environment interactions that can change up the flow of battle. From jumping off a wall to get behind an opponent, to slamming your opponents head into a nearby wall, to throwing an innocent bystander at your opponent, these are definitely a welcome addition to the game.
