Dead Island

What is green and black and red all over?

The rotting, decaying corpse of a zombie that is spewing blood all over from just losing a limb or its head from you smacking it with a baseball bat too many times. And trust me, it happens a lot. What I'm talking about is the game that released late last year by the name of Dead Island.

That means zombies, zombies, more zombies and for a change of pace, zombies (right up Gorify's alley on Chime.in). And this isn't just your run of the mill zombie survival game. There's a progressive system that as you gain experience and level up, you get to upgrade your skills (1 per level) and the zombies get harder to kill. On top of that, you can modify pretty much any weapon you can get your hands on, from something as simple as a baseball bat with nails in it, to a machete that has the ability to electrocute zombies.

And there is a story to this game, though you may be a bit hard pressed to find it among all the side quests (a.k.a. errands) you run for the various characters you run across. Currently, I've put probably 30 hours into the game in the past month and a half, and only have gotten through around 36% of the story, but I haven't really gotten bored with it yet. It does get a little repetitive after a while though; go get me this, go find x person and bring me back y item. Each quest is practically the same with a different coat of paint.

But that doesn't mean it isn't fun to smash a zombie's head in or slice their limbs off while on these repetitive missions. It's especially fun to blow zombies up using a grenade made from two deodorant bottles and duct tape. And while it is fun, the game is rather scary as well.

The weather and time of day changes dynamically and at times, you need to use flashlights to see anything. This makes it quite frightening when a zombie screams behind you and then starts beating on you. At times like this, you may just want to beat every zombie to a bloody pulp, and others, you just want to get to your destination, because you can, and very likely will, get overwhelmed at times.

In this way, it makes you think like you would (hopefully) think in the event of an actual zombie apocalypse. Do you risk your life and try and eliminate all the zombies in the area or do you try and sneak around them? There are some that are a lot stronger than the normal zombies, some that charge at you to run you down, and even some that violently explode if you get too close to them (or if you are like me, punch them and instantly kill yourself).

Couple that with the zombies getting progressively stronger and you have yourself a challenging game that can make 2 hours seem like 20 minutes.

Dead Island gets 8 stars from The Review

The final verdict? Dead Island deserves 8/10 stars. I would give it a perfect 10 if it weren't for the kind of repetitive nature of the quests. Regardless, if you like zombies and gore, this is one game that should definitely be on your 'To Play' list. Especially since Lionsgate Films plans on releasing a film based around the controversial release trailer for this amazing game.
