It Arrives.
First off, I would like to say that going into this movie, I had high hopes for it. This was mainly because of the fact that it was from the director of the Star Trek reboot and the producer of the Jurassic Park series. I feel I was let down.
The premise of the movie is good; a group of friends want to make a movie and while they are, an alien decides to attack the town. That's where the good really ends. In all reality, Super 8 is just a modern day (although set in 1979), darker retelling of E.T. (which was Spielberg as well).
The alien, a very tall, 6-limbed hominid, crash landed on earth and just wants to repair his ship and go home. However, the military won't let him, thus instilling a hatred for all mankind in him (Apparently, the alien's name is Cooper, and will be addressed as such from here on out). Due to a psychic connection that Cooper made with one of the military scientists that explained what he really wanted, said scientist wrecks the train that Cooper was in, which allows him to escape military control.
Now free, Cooper starts stealing various random things to try and rebuild his ship so he can finally leave. People, especially the group of kids (don't worry, I didn't forget about them) start to take notice. Finally, the girl in the group gets kidnapped and the rest try to find her. Long story short, the kids find the girl, come face-to-face with Cooper and live to tell about it, then Cooper goes home.
My rating? I say Super 8 gets a not so super 6.5/10 stars. This is mainly due to the rehashed story. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy it, it just seems like more of the same. You may have a different opinion, I know that Super 8 did get good critic reviews. The only way you can be sure of whether or not you'll like it is to watch it yourself, which I recommend as the special effects are pretty good, and formulate your own opinion about it.

I really enjoyed this movie. I ranked it #7 on my list of best movies of 2011, however when I wrote that list, I hadn't seen Real Steel or Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. So, Super 8 would be bumped down the list now. The child actors are what impressed me about this film. They made it quite enjoyable and reminded me of movies like the Goonies (or the Belchies from Bob's Burgers). The special effects for the train wreck were phenomenal, but I really wasn't a fan of alien's look. Still, I felt the movie was a great homage to an older era of monster movies and kid adventure movies. Plus, the movie-within-a-movie AKA The Case was a uproarious credit scene reminiscent of movies from a different era.
ReplyDeleteI agree with much of what you said.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Ghost Protocol yet (haven't seen any of the Mission Impossible movies yet to be honest) but Real Steel definitely bumped Super 8 down my list as well. I liked the look of the alien honestly, but was rather amused that they gave him the name of 'Cooper' in the credits.
Glad to hear your input on the movie, it's always good to see a new face around here.
