In brightest day,
In blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power.
Green Lantern's Light.
Due to The Avenger's coming out next weekend, I figured that Green Lantern would be an appropriate movie review (yes, I know, Green Lantern is DC, not Marvel, but he's a superhero nonetheless). As my first movie (review) based on a comic, I was somewhat surprised at how this movie ended. More on that later, though.
Fans of the comic should know Hal Jordan's story, but for those who don't, let me fill you in (I'll try and keep the spoilers to a minimum). Hal's dad was a test pilot until a freak accident killed him when Hal was a small boy. Cut to present day, where Hal has replaced his dad and he is one of the best test pilots at the company that he works at. Seems pretty normal right? Well, buckle up, because this is where it gets interesting.
An alien by the name of Abin Sur (who is part of the Green Lantern Corps.) crash lands on Earth. He tells his power ring to find someone to replace him, as he is dying. It finds Hal, due to him being fearless, which is a major part of being a Green Lantern.

So now, we'll talk a bit more about the movie. The scenes with Hal's backstory and training as a Lantern are great. It really just goes to show you what being a Green Lantern is all about. Interspersed with his training are shots of the villain, Parallax.
Then, towards the end of the movie, Parallax decides to attack Earth. Hal fights back and within about 10 minutes, the movie is over. So much time was spent on backstory and what not, that the ending seems incredibly rushed. Although, certain events in the movie alluded to at least one sequel, so that's something.

If it wasn't for the ending coming so suddenly, this could have been a great movie. Instead it is relegated to the "good movie" pile. I'm interested to see if they do indeed make a sequel, though Hollywood would be hard pressed not to, what with all the hints they put in place for one to happen. Regardless, if you are a fan of the comics, or just in the mood for some crazy superhero action (not to mention Ryan Reynolds in a skintight costume, Hey there ladies!), you wouldn't be going amiss with seeing Green Lantern. Just don't be expecting a stellar ending.
