Big Hero 6

Hello, I am Baymax, your personal healthcare companion.

When you hear the term "Marvel movie," what do you think of? The Avengers? Guardians of the Galaxy? Howard the Duck? I have another to add to that list: Big Hero 6.

While not branded as a Marvel film, Big Hero 6 is loosely (very loosely) based on a Marvel comic by the same name. It follows the tale of a group of 5 friends and a plus-sized inflatable robot named Baymax. While initially not intending to be heros, the group becomes just that.

While definitely aimed at a younger audience, there are things in the movie the entire family can enjoy in this one. There's comedy. There's action. There's even a super-emotional catalyst that starts the friends on their epic quest.

Now, while I have never read the comics myself (never heard of them until this movie came out) I do wish the movie had stayed a bit truer to its roots. The backstory of the team (and even how they have their powers) is completely different. The story presented makes sense in the cinematic sense, but if you have read the comics, you may want to stow your expectations a little.

Along that same plane, with the exception of Baymax and his patient/owner, Hiro, the characters seem, at times, rather one-dimensional. I really felt like the rest of the Big Hero 6 team needed more development. I mean, yes, we do have some backstory on them, but only a minimal amount. Of course, this is a children's movie, so there are bound to be some flaws inherent when viewed from an adults perspective.

Taking everything into consideration, I did really enjoy this movie. It was a lot of fun considering it's meant to be for children. I do wish that there was a bit more character development, but maybe that will be included in the inevitable sequel. If you have kids, or are a kid at heart, I would definitely recommend this film. Now FISTBUMP! Balalalala!
